Michael Jordan’s son, Jeffrey, has officially announced he will attend the University of Illinois and “walk-on” to play for Bruce Weber’s Fighting Illini! The details are here. The 6′2″ guard was not highly recruited by the U. of I. Coach Weber didn’t think he was good enough to play at an Elite level school like Illinois. Last weekend Jeff with his mother Juanita visited Champaign to take a tour of the campus. He also played a few pick up games with the current players and won over the team and coach. Note: this video clip is before he committed to the Illini. Check it out…
Michael Jordan was “hands-off” his son’s recruitment. It was always, what Jeffrey wanted. Michael and Juanita are divorced, and Juanita is the one handling the recruiting. Of course Michael was hoping Jeff would someday…attend his alma mater, the University of North Carolina Tarheels. Jeff wanted to play for The State University. The Jordan’s still make Chicago, Illinois, their home. So, what does “preferred walk-on” mean? He has a guaranteed spot on the roster, but not guaranteed playing time. Since, Illinois doesn’t have any scholarships available, the Jordan’s will pay full tuition. Do you think they can afford it? Better yet, do you think the Illini will be sporting “Air Jordan” Nikes next season?” How fitting a Jordan will be coming to Champaign. The Fighting Illini are the first college basketball team to sport the “Jordan baggy pants” in the 1988-89 season.
